Having worked in customer service and to deal with others, who work in it on a daily basis, I often wonder what is one basic thing that I would always require my employees to do at work if I ever were put in a position to manage a bunch of people in this industry. Now I have come up with a simple answer, smile.
Less and less people are smiling these days; even those, who are supposed to do so for work.
Successful business people often say that if the product is good, it will sell itself. Well, I am unsure of this statement; because most of us still buy things that we want from people. It is natural for us to associate the quality of the customer service with the one of the product. The buying and enjoying the product make up the whole customer experience.
It does not matter how good a product is, if the sales rep is exhibiting an arrogant or indifferent attitude, that individual is doing not only a tarnish to reputation of the business, but also a downgrade to the quality of the product.
My mom used to work in the customer service industry. Her professional motto was that customers were always right. Are customers always right? Of course not. That being said, if you have made the decision to work in a service industry, then you would have to respect the nature of your profession, which is you are here to serve others. So, smile!
