Alluringly Nostalgic Smile

Do you smile often? Do I smile often? I don’t, but used to, would love to do it more often though. Living in a big city, what we are in need of the most is neither money nor affluence, rather, a simple smile.

Majority of people in the big city don’t smile. If I weren’t a big city dweller, I would have assumed this is an exaggeration. The truth of the matter is that it is not.

I honestly don’t appreciate that I have become such a poker face. I tried to resist it so forcibly in the past. I walked down streets, wearing a smile on my face, but then only to be rejected by the weird gaze of others. I don’t want to be an outcast in a metropolis, where tons of people reside, but no one seems to know or care for each other. To fit in, my decision to smile less goes from one of the conscious to now one of the unconscious and habitual.

Big city dwellers don’t smile often. Their sans smile face can either be interpreted as a shield, with which they use to cover up their insecurities, or as a facade to show off their toughness, of which they are in need to survive in this dog eat dog, concrete jungle.

Smile has become a rare sight to witness these days. That’s why a smile in the air is so alluringly nostalgic.
